Evaluation: Question 7

      College Magazine                                                                                         Music Magazine

As you can see, over time I have progressed an awful lot from my first set of tasks to my final magazine pieces. I think this is mainly down to the use of technology. The college magazine task was my first time using InDesign and Photoshop so I was getting to grips with learning how to use it. The cover also looks quite plain, it needed more text and a more considered approach to fonts and colour use. The cover itself did not follow any structure and was missing some key parts like a banner or tagline. My final magazine is a good piece of work in my opinion it follows a set colour scheme and relates well to the genre of the magazine. I show a good understanding of fonts and their sizes and also colours when compared to my college magazine task. The colours on my first task were a very broad range however I feel that if I had set one specific outline colour like black or white, I could have made it look much more appealing and professional. I feel with the new knowledge and experience I have with creating a magazine cover on Photoshop, it has shown my improvement in using the software and showing my understanding of how to create a magazine cover, contents page and double page spread. I felt by starting off with the preliminary task I had come to an understanding of how to use the softwares well. It gave me a familiarity for when i started my second piece, as you can see my understanding of shot types colour schemes and fonts had improved which finalised in me putting this magazine together. I also understood how my research would specifically benefit my work. For example the costume my model should wear, the posture he should have, the facial expression etc. Finally between the two covers I feel that I improved in choosing fonts, I went out of my way to download fonts and make sure they held some similarity so they would work well together for my final piece.

As for my contents pages, looking back both pages do hold similar characteristics such as the use of the colour green. Also they both have green as a main part of the page, being used as headings displaying what is on that particular page. That is where the similarities end as the music magazine contents page looks a lot more professional and polished due to the thought and research that has gone into it. You can see how I have used stereotypical characteristics of a drum and bass magazine due to the thorough research telling me that I should arrange pictures and text a certain way. I have grasped how to use the software correctly now and developed my skills in order to create an overall better contents page.
